Yes, I (well, honestly, we) have become a part of “those people.” I never thought I would be. But as you age things do change. The first time I became one of “those people” was after the birth of our first granddaughter. I joined the minions of grandparents who love to brag about their grandchildren, share photos of their grandchildren, and generally just talk on and on about the joy of being a grandparent.
While my husband and I had both grown up having dogs in our lives, it was rare to actually have one that lived in the house full-time. But in 2019 our son welcomed a two months old Chiweenie into our home. Sunni was quickly an indoor dog, only venturing outside to play or take care of business. Sunni quickly brought moments of joy for all of us. We all laughed at her antics; we all worked to get her housebroken; and we all took turns making sure she was well taken care of.
2021 found our son heading out of state to attend graduate school. He could not take Sunni with him so she remained with us. Then I felt the need to give Sunni a sibling. After a few months of discussions, we began the search to adopt an older dog in need of a home. Honey came to us from Texas by way of a young lady in Atlanta. Honey’s owner had passed away and her granddaughter here in Atlanta tried to make her part of her home. But her work hours were so long she knew it was not fair to Honey.
Honey joined us in March. She is a slighter larger Chiweenie mix of the same coloring. The two “girls” bonded quickly and she fit right in. She is about two years older than Sunni and is calmer than Sunni. It did not take long for my husband and I to join a different group of “those people” – we became “spoiled dog” people! Searching for beds they both loved; searching for food they both loved; searching for toys they both loved (and didn’t shred to pieces!). After several trial and error purchases, all of the above were found. However, Honey had to be taken shopping to find at least one toy she liked. And to our great surprise, her one toy has been left alone by Sunni!
We now share almost as many funny stories and photos of the two dogs as we do our granddaughters! They bring joy to us both on a daily basis. We love watching them play tricks on each other to get the same chew bone. Despite having identical chew bones, like any normal siblings, they want the one their sister has. We laugh as they maneuver to be the one sitting closest to one of us. And they both love our granddaughters! When all four are together, the laughter increases greatly! I am so thankful that God provides us with the opportunity to laugh.
